What are the goals of the unit?
  • Students will understand the proper techniques for protecting personal information on the internet
  • Students will learn how online predators obtain personal information
  • Students will understand the implications of cyberbullying

a. Private identity and cyber predators: iSafe: Screen name and passwords, protect personal info, ID theft (presentation for parents)?,
asking questions without asking
b. Chat, IM, and e-mail safety: iSafe Cyber Security and Cyber Community actvities
c. Cyberbullying: iSafe video and discussion

Week1:
  • Screen Names and Passwords; Protecting Personal Info: Reviewing the screen name that was chosen for Ning at the beginning of the quarter
    • Day 1
      • Watch the soccer video and discuss the specific grooming techniques the officer used
      • Give them "Just a Chat" sheet and have them find an example unsafe information
      • Handout - 4 R's of Internet Safety
    • Day 2
      • Cyber Predator activity: How do predators obtain your personal information? Use the activity about getting answers without asking question directly. Follow up with discussion of how easy or difficult it is to obtain information from others
      • Grooming process - Give students the grooming information handout
      • Watch the soccer video (Saved in MS/Tech/21stCentury... folder)
      • Give students assignment for Day 5 to respond on Ning message board to the following questions:
        • Why do students feel safe on the internet?
        • What are some dangers on the internet?
        • What are some good things on the internet?
    • Day 3
      • Cyberbullying online survey
      • What does your screen name say about you?
      • Screen name activity: provide a list of screen names and have the students break them into two lists (names that contain identifying info and those that do not)
      • Have them develop/revise their own screen names to make them safer
    • Day 4&5
      • Introduce Cyberbullying by showing the "Ryan's Story" video (22 minutes)
      • Stop at pause moments and have the students reflect on their Ning pages with a blog post
    • Day 6
      • Use SRO to discuss cyberbullying and prevention with students
      • Use Survey Monkey for online cyberbullying survey
    • Day 7 Hand out and Complete "Online Chat Aptitude"
    • Day 8-10 Develop a Public Service Announcement on Internet Safety or Cyberbullying using:
      • use one of the following.
        • ToonDoo
        • ComicLife
        • Photostory
        • Audacity
        • Animoto
        • Mixbook
        • Voicethread


    • Day 11: Email etiquette, Proper uses, Attachements,set up account "printed legal document"
    • Day 12: E-mail (lab day). ID SPAM, hoaxes, chain letters, viruses, phishing--using Snopes.com
    • Day 13: Phone Safety and Unit wrap up.

Project Idea: Public Service Announcement using ComicLife

Topics could include: Posting pictures, posting personal information, sharing passwords, meeting someone in person that you met online, MySpace pages, lying on Internet forms, saying things about other people online, applying for jobs and colleges, usernames (choosing username), IM Speak, Clicking on links
